Appreciation and Understanding of Natural Marbles, Granities and Limestones

When purchasing natural marbles, granites, slate and stone, it must be appreciated that these materials are in most cases over 300 million years old. They are from a part of this world that has been consistantly moved by continents and seas, earth movements, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Therefore, in the course of developing a quarry, considerable variation may occur in the colour and veining of the marble/granite/slate/stone extracted. For this reason, uniformity of appearance should not be expected. Each type or piece of marble is unique and each has different characteristics, no two pieces of marble can ever be exactly the same.

Marbles and stone may even contain fossilised remains of shells, fish, animals, etc.

Marble/granite/slate/stone are sold throughout the world as inherently unsound and this is manifest in anything from hairline cracks in some types, to extensive brecciations in others.
It is common place to stop, cramp and fill these materials to make good, strengthen and reinforce, such repairs should therefore be regarded as normal and not treated as defective.

Marble, slate and stone are porous materials even when the surface is polished, therfore care and respect should be taken with such things as wine, cigarettes, cola, acidic products, fruit, oil, etc which can stain or remove the polish from the surface.

Granite is extremely hard and is not easily marked or damaged.
